I always thought I was very lucky as I had a fairly happy marriage for more than thırty years despite my husband having a drink problem. He was a lone drinker and used to do all his work and as long as he had his bottles he didn’t interfere with what I wanted to do. He did however keep us very broke with his habit and would never take any advice or listen to what I had to say on the subject. Then everything changed when he had a heart attack and it was found that he needed major surgery. He was given a metal heart valve and had a double bypass and the drinking stopped as he was on a blood thinner. One day after a check up at the hospital he came home and announced that the doctor said he could drink one glass of red wine a day. I did not really believe the story but in a very short time he was on a couple of litres a day and beer as well. After three months and serious anaemia he went to hospital for a blood tranfusion and had a serious stroke.
My husband lost his power of speech and use of hıs right arm and his personalıty completely changed. I looked after him for three years in this condition and he became very aggressive and violent and looked upon me as an enemy. He started attacking me, throwing my clothes and belongings out and I was suddenly just a slave unable to have a normal life. I am not a person who can run away from duty so easily and our time together had spanned many years. I carried on trying to do my best but after he cut off the cables to the house phone and internet and took the keys from the doors I was becoming afraid about what would happen next. He attacked me a few times and my neighbours helped me.He started to get obsessions and I was not allowed to place anything on the coffee table or sit down and rest. He made the final uncalled for attack on me and tried to kill me.Neighbours saved me and the police came. I had always thought that we would always be together but it shows that one never knows what will happen.
